DeSantis says US should not accept refugees from Gaza

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:02:26 GMT

(CNN) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Saturday that the US should not accept refugees from Gaza, as tens of thousands flee their homes following an evacuation warning from Israel ahead of a possible ground assault.“I don’t know what (President Joe) Biden’s gonna do, but we cannot accept people from Gaza into this country as refugees. I am not going to do that,” DeSantis, who is vying for the GOP presidential nomination, said at a campaign stop in Creston, Iowa.“If you look at how they behave, not all of them are Hamas, but they are all antisemitic. None of them believe in Israel’s right to exist,” he continued.DeSantis argued that Arab states should accept refugees from Gaza, who are attempting to cross south into Egypt, rather than refugees being “import(ed)” to the United States.DeSantis’ characterization of Gaza residents is not supported by public polling on the issue. In a July poll by the pro-Israel organization the Washington Institute, 50% of Gazans agreed that “H...

‘Ring of fire’ eclipse appears over the Americas

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:02:26 GMT

(CNN) — A rare celestial spectacle appeared over the Americas Saturday — the likes of which won’t be seen again in this part of the world until 2046.Millions were within the path of the annular solar eclipse as it created a “ring of fire” in the sky over North, Central and South America.During an annular solar eclipse, the moon is at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth, so it can’t completely block the sun. Instead, the sun’s fiery light surrounds the moon’s shadow, creating the so-called ring of fire. The eclipse began in Oregon at 9:13 a.m. PT (12:13 p.m. ET). It was expected to end off the Atlantic coast of Brazil at 3:48 p.m. ET.As it passed over city after city, the skies darkened as the moon moved in front of the sun, causing temperatures to drop. Those outside of the path were also treated to a crescent-shaped partial solar eclipse, when it looks like the moon is taking a bite out of the sun.Little crescents were visible on the ground and reflecting off ca...

The Israeli military said it is trying to clear away civilians ahead of a concentrated assault on Hamas militants in the north, including in what it said was their underground hideouts at Gaza City. The U.N. and aid groups say such a rapid exodus along with Israel’s siege of the territory would cause untold human suffering. Gaza’s humanitarian crisis already was mounting Saturday amid a growing shortage of water and medical supplies under a week-old Israeli blockade, whic...
