SAN ANGELO, Texas (ConchoValleyHomepage) — With the "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" blockbuster combo officially in theaters on July 21, some people would think that life couldn't be better for the world's favorite pretty-in-pink fashionista. They would be wrong.National Barbie-in-a-Blender Day, celebrated on July 27, was made to offer a scathing critique of Mattel Inc.'s poster child by encouraging observers to do just as its name suggests - put a Barbie doll in a blender and, optionally, set the device for as high as it will allow. Plastic puree, anyone? This strange celebration is held all across the world now, particularly by artists, photographers and other occupants of creatively-oriented professions. The holiday itself is 19 years old, being founded in 2004 by a social movement looking to promote a less consumer-focused culture. But how did it get to this point? The origins for this, ahem, "unique" national holiday stem from much more than an extreme hatred of the iconic toy. It al...Report: 100k+ Austin jobs threatened by AI

Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 20:11:01 GMT
Two of Colorado’s most popular fourteeners, Mount Lincoln and Mount Democrat, will reopen on Friday, restoring legal access to all but one of the four so-called DeCaLiBron loop peaks.Landowner John Reiber closed the peaks in March following the failure of a bill in the legislature that would have amended Colorado’s recreational use statute to protect landowners who allow the public to recreate on their land. In order to climb the peaks legally now, hikers will need to sign an electronic waiver of liability. A similar waiver has been required this year for competitors and spectators in the Leadville 100 series of races in order to protect private landowners there.Reiber collaborated with the U.S. Forest Service and the town of Alma, in cooperation with the Colorado Mountain Club and the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, to reopen the peaks. The solution is being called “temporary” while a coalition of user groups lobbies the legislature to “fix” the...Lightning-sparked Lowline fire expands in forest northeast of Gunnison, forcing evacuations

By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesSometimes a kitchen needs a last-minute miracle, and mine is always frozen pesto. At a moment’s notice, I can stir a spoonful of herby, garlicky zip into any dish that needs it, lifting it to a whole new level. In a perfect pesto world, that frozen sauce is homemade — a mix of tiny-leafed Genovese basil, Italian pine nuts and good olive oil that you’ve pounded by hand with a mortar and pestle. In my world, though, I usually reach for the food processor. I whirl regular floppy-leafed basil with olive oil and sliced almonds (instead of pricier pine nuts) until I get a purée thick enough to spoon into an ice cube tray for fast access when dinner is nigh. (And if your frozen stash runs out, good store-bought pesto is a reliably herby Plan B.)Pesto is typically destined for a plate of al dente pasta, but it actually works wonderfully as an ingredient, adding color and garlicky verve to soups, stews, or, in this case, a one-pan orzo dish loaded with...Latest news
