By Michael Liedtke | Associated PressSAN FRANCISCO — A federal court jury has decided that Google’s Android app store has been protected by anticompetitive barriers that have damaged smartphone consumers and software developers, dealing a blow to a major pillar of a technology empire. The unanimous verdict reached Monday came after just three hours of deliberation following a four-week trial revolving around a lucrative payment system within Google’s Play store. The store is the main place where hundreds of millions of people around the world download and install apps that work on smartphones powered by Google’s Android software.Epic Games, the maker of the popular Fortnite video game, filed a lawsuit against Google three years ago, alleging that the internet search giant has been abusing its power to shield its Play Store from competition in order to protect a gold mine that makes billions of dollars annually. Just as Apple does for its iPhone app store, Google col...Closing arguments start in trial of 3 Washington state police officers charged in Black man’s death

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A Black man who was shocked, beaten and hogtied facedown on a sidewalk pleaded for breath during his arrest in Washington state, and the three police officers charged in his death did not respond to his pleas, a prosecutor told the jury in closing arguments Monday.Had the officers done what most people would do if someone was struggling to breathe, Ellis would be alive today, said special prosecutor Patty Eakes, who is working for the Washington Attorney General’s office.“They chose instead to treat him like an animal, in the most dehumanizing position you can imagine,” she said. The Pierce County Medical Examiner ruled Ellis’ death a homicide and determined he died of hypoxia due to physical restraint.Ellis died March 3, 2020, nearly three months before George Floyd’s death would spark an international outcry against police brutality. The trial is the first in which an officer was charged in a death of a suspect since Washington voters approve...Red Wings forward David Perron suspended 6 games for cross-check on Ottawa’s Artem Zub

DALLAS (AP) — Red Wings forward David Perron was suspended for six games by the NHL on Monday for cross-checking Ottawa defenseman Artem Zub in the aftermath of a hit on Dylan Larkin that knocked out the Detroit captain.Perron was given a match penalty for intent to injure for cross-checking Zub as he stood next to the prone Larkin in the first period of Saturday’s game. Larkin was motionless on the ice after getting cross-checked in the back of the head and neck by Ottawa’s Mathieu Joseph. In its explanation for the severity of the penalty against Perron, the NHL said he had sufficient time to engage Zub in a different manner. “First, this is not a hockey play. This is an intentional strike with a stick made with the purpose of exacting retribution on an opponent,” the league said. “This is not a case in which two players are jousting and are mutually aware that sticks are being raised.”The NHL referred to video that showed Perron circling back after the whistle, and taking se...Parrish and Sylla each score to help Clemson beat Notre Dame for program’s 4th men’s soccer title

Well, that certainly came out of nowhere.Touchdowns, third down conversions and scoring in the red zone were all on display by a New York Jets offense that had struggled to do much of anything all season. And it was Zach Wilson who led the way in the Jets’ 30-6 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday, bouncing back from a benching and a tumultuous week by having perhaps the best game of his nearly three-year career.“I feel like that pressure that he’s been carrying just didn’t seem to be there,” said wide receiver Randall Cobb, who caught one of Wilson’s two TD passes. “And it was nice to see him just playing loose and free and having fun and going out there and slinging it around.”Wilson, who was benched for two games, was 27 of 35 for 301 yards while setting career highs with a 75% completion rate and a 117.9 passer rating.“He was awesome,” coach Robert Saleh said. “I felt like he was extremely decisive. He played fast. There were a lot of ‘oh crap’ moments whe...NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Champions
