A proposal to construct a luxury gated housing development in the Verdugo Mountains has residents concerned over the potential devastation of wildlife and native plants while leaving tenants in a fire zone.Residents in the Verdugo Mountains love enjoying the undisturbed wilderness that surrounds their community. But locals say a newly proposed luxury development will threaten everything. The proposed project, called The Canyon Hills Development, was approved by the Los Angeles City Council in 2005.It was given a 20-year timeframe during which it was allowed to build about 220 new homes. But over the last 18 years, nothing has happened until the developer, Whitebird, Inc., requested permits to begin preparing the site in January 2023.That’s when the group “No Canyon Hills” reorganized to protest the proposed plans.Residents concerned that a proposed luxury housing development in the Verdugo mountains will wipe out natural landscapes and displace wildlife. A wanted felon who was on probation and fled from deputies was arrested with a teenager in Fillmore on Wednesday, and they now both face charges. According to a release from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, a call regarding two suspicious individuals in a parked vehicle at the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Sierra Vista Avenue came in around 11 a.m. on Wednesday. A male suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Juan Torres of Oxnard, gave deputies a false name before immediately fleeing on foot. The second suspect, Victoria Nunez, 19, of Camarillo, was arrested at the scene and booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility for possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, officials said. Deputies began a search for Torres and were unable to locate him until several hours later, when a resident reported seeing Torres on their property in the 400 block of B Street. Deputies returned to search for him and found him, but he fled again on foot an...GOP senator demands DEA boss defend no-bid contracts

By Joshua Goodman and Jim Mustain | Associated PressA senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary committee is demanding that U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration chief Anne Milgram address allegations of improper hiring and contracting of her past associates. The request Thursday by Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa follows an Associated Press investigation finding that a federal watchdog is investigating whether strict federal rules on no-bid contracting and hiring may have been violated to channel DEA work to Milgram’s associates.“These are serious allegations, and DEA must respond to them and clear the air,” Grassley wrote in a letter sent to Milgram’s office, a copy of which was obtained by the AP.The scrutiny by the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector Genera comes as the DEA is struggling with repeated revelations of agent misconduct and a fentanyl crisis claiming more than 100,000 overdose deaths a year that Milgram has called the “deadliest dr...Gov. NEW YORK (AP) — Los Angeles Angels rookie catcher Logan O’Hoppe was forced from Thursday’s 9-3 loss to the New York Yankees by a recurrence of intense left shoulder pain after a swing in the ninth inning.“I felt it pop, come out the back, and will be evaluated the next couple days,” O’Hoppe said. “Let’s hope it’s nothing too serious.”O’Hoppe was acquired from Philadelphia last August in the trade for outfielder Brandon Marsh and made his big league debut Sept. 28. The 23-year-old, considered a top AL Rookie of the Year candidate. is hitting .283 with four homers and 13 RBIs.He initially hurt the shoulder during Monday’s 5-4 win at Boston, but stayed in that game.“I think in Boston it freaked me out more,” O’Hoppe said. “This time, it hurt a little bit more just because I knew it was the same thing. It didn’t feel as bad, this one, but I was just more aware.”He lined a 2-2 sweeper from Yankees pitcher Greg Weissert into the left-f...Anti-abortion group blasts Trump over federal ban comments

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A major anti-abortion group blasted former President Donald Trump on the issue Thursday, saying his contention that abortion restrictions should be left up to individual states, not the federal government, is a “morally indefensible position for a self-proclaimed pro-life presidential candidate.”The Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America group was responding to a statement by Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung for a Washington Post story about division among the 2024 GOP presidential field on abortion-related issues. The group has said it would not support any White House candidate who did not at a minimum support a 15-week federal abortion ban.“The Supreme Court made clear in its decision that it was returning the issue to the people to decide through their elected representatives in the states and in Congress,” the group’s president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, said in a news release. “Holding to the position that it is exclusively up to the states i...Bears have options at No. 9 going into NFL draft

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bears already used the draft to address their glaring need for a playmaking receiver. They still have big holes to fill. The Bears come in needing better protection for quarterback Justin Fields and help on the defensive line, starting with the No. 9 overall pick.General manager Ryan Poles already made one huge splash when he traded the No. 1 overall selection to Carolina for receiver DJ Moore and moved down eight spots. The Bears also got a haul of picks from the Panthers in that blockbuster deal.At No. 9, there are a number of ways Poles could go. If Jalen Carter is available, things could get real interesting. Do they grab the Georgia defensive tackle and decide his immense talent outweighs the risks? Carter was viewed as a potential No. 1 pick had the Bears stayed at the top of the draft, before his off-field issues and a poor pro day.Do they give Fields more protection by grabbing an offensive lineman? And if they go for a blocker, do they pick former ...Zurich Classic of New Orleans Scores
