Denver’s beloved City Park Jazz series has been the victim of unusually stormy weather since it launched its 2023 season on June 4, with heavy rains and hail cutting down audiences — and donations — amid increased costs and new Denver parks regulations.“We were able to pull off the first show when the rain abated a half hour beforehand, but we only ended up getting a few hundred people,” said Dave Flomberg, director of marketing for City Park Jazz, which this year is celebrating its 37th season. “Which is better than nothing. But it was off our normal few thousand, even for a slow show.”However, the Sunday, June 11, concert with Stafford Hunter & Jazz Explorations was canceled entirely due to fast-moving storms and safety concerns, Flomberg said. The nonprofit City Park Jazz typically reserves about a year’s worth of extra funds on top of its $100,000 annual budget so it can ensure the free, all-ages series has a healthy future. Whether you’re enjoying the recent cloudy skies or are waiting for a typical sunny Southern California day, June gloom has been in full effect much of the month. What might have been unexpected is recent thunderstorm activity last week and over the weekend, which experts say is rare given that June is typically one of the drier months of the year.Ryan Kittell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard, explained that it’s normal to have cloudy conditions linger into the afternoon hours in June, thus the name June gloom. So when might Southern Californians expect a break from the clouds? “It looks like this weekend might be a little bit better, in terms of a better clearing in the late morning, afternoon hours, but looking into next week, it looks like maybe we’ll have a return to very persistent gloominess,” Kittell said. “Typically we get into July, especially July and August, the waters start to warm, start to get more monsoonal influence, we usually get better, mo...Navigating the Intersection of Workers’ Compensation and Personal Injury: An Expert’s Insight

Osborne: Focus on Institutional Mission to Thrive Through the “Demographic Cliff”
Published Tue, 05 Nov 2024 16:18:09 GMT
Higher education in America has been successfully adapting to sociocultural and demographic shifts throughout much of its long history. The industrial revolution, GI Bill, admission of women and students of color, and broad reductions of state support for public institutions resulted in changes to operations, culture, and mission. Recently, concern over a “Demographic Cliff,” an expected decrease in high school graduates, has been a common topic for discussion. We believe that many institutions can use this “Demographic Cliff” as an opportunity to rethink institutional priorities and refocus on institutional mission. This demographic shift is not an ignorable issue, yet we expect most institutions will respond productively to this coming challenge, and perhaps emerge stronger for having done so.
