Statistics Canada to release April jobs numbers this morning

OTTAWA — Statistics Canada is set to release its April labour force survey this morning, providing updated numbers on employment levels in the country. RBC says it expects 12,000 jobs were added last month, the lowest number since September. Employers have kept their hiring appetite in recent months, even as high interest rates make borrowing more expensive for people and businesses. The unemployment rate continued to sit at five per cent in March, hovering near record lows. However, job vacancies have been falling and the Bank of Canada’s recent business outlook survey shows employers reporting less intense labour shortages. The Bank of Canada’s aggressive rate hikes are expected to filter through to the labour market in the coming months, leading to a rise in unemployment. YELLOWKNIFE — Northern leaders say they are disappointed with changes that allow Canadian North to increase prices and reduce flight service in remote communities, but the airline says it will be better able to meet demand. Ottawa announced late last month it had approved new terms and conditions for Canadian North’s merger with First Air. Those include permitting the airline to reduce community service to one flight per week and increase fares up to 25 per cent within a calendar year. “People across Nunavut and the Northwest Territories are rightfully concerned about the cost of travel in the North,” Nunavut NDP MP Lori Idlout said in a statement. “After speaking with the company and expressing my concerns, I’m hopeful that northerners won’t see an increase in their costs, but I will continue to keep a close eye to ensure prices and services are fair.” Canadian North serves 25 communities in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and northern Quebec, as well as ...City of Austin approves aid for homes damaged in flood

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Austin City council Thursday approved a resolution from council member Chito Vela directing the Watershed Protection, Austin Resource Recovery, and the Parks and Recreation departments to quickly clear creek beds of vegetative debris. The resolution is in response to the more than 30 homes that were flooded in north Austin after the April 20 storm. Vegetative debris, such as dead trees, clogged a storm culvert in Little Walnut Creek, leading to heavy flooding in the area that damaged homes. DEAR HARRIETTE: My son has barely reached puberty, and he already has very strong underarm odor. I am afraid to have him wear deodorant at a young age, but he needs something.I have heard such bad things about antiperspirants and cancer. I don’t want to introduce his body to anything that may harm him, but we have to do something. What do you recommend?Smelly PitsDEAR SMELLY PITS: Take a trip to your pediatrician and get your son a physical. Check to make sure it’s nothing more than normal hormonal changes causing the strong odor. Ask the doctor for recommendations for how to get the odor in check.Of course, your son needs to clean his body well, something that is not always a strong suit for adolescent boys. You may need to teach him how to wash his body thoroughly. Do not assume that he knows because you bathed him as a child.Beyond basic hygiene, your doctor may be able to recommend a deodorant — not an antiperspirant — that can help to keep odor in check....Miss Manners: I don’t want to tell my boss I’m pregnant

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I am a young woman who works in a professional setting. I got married fairly young after my husband and I graduated from college, and we’re very happy and well established. We own a house, both have great jobs and have two wonderful cats.My manager is much older than I am and has children my age. While we generally get along, she has repeatedly told me that I should never have children. The first time, I thought it was a joke. The fifth time, I started ignoring her whenever the subject of children came up because the comments were hurtful. This has made the comments less frequent, but she still often complains about how awful her own children are, how lucky I am to be child-free and how I should keep it that way.My husband and I recently decided to start trying for a baby, and I am now pregnant! We are delighted and so excited to start preparing for our little one. I intend to continue working remotely once I finish maternity leave. How soon is it polite to in...Dear Abby: This is not how I wanted the bride to react to my gift

I don’t think the young man ever opened the basket. I did mention something to the wife once about what was inside the basket, and her expression was blank. It has been over a year. Should I forget about it or be bold and ask?GIFT-GIVER IN NEW YORKDEAR GIFT-GIVER: Be bold and ask. If the wife looked blank, it was probably because she knew nothing about the gift your husband had told her husband was for “him” instead of for “them.”Related ArticlesAdvice | Dear Abby: His menu angered me, so I’ve stopped hosting family dinners Advice | Dear Abby: My wife is furious that I...Latest news
