Want to cut down your own Christmas tree? Here’s how to apply. Leaves are falling and Thanksgiving is less than three weeks away, which means the season for cutting your own Christmas tree on public lands is fast approaching. If that’s a family tradition for you, it’s not too soon to start making plans.Golden Gate Canyon State Park has opened the application process for 250 permits which will be awarded randomly. Applicants who have been selected will be notified by email. Applications must be received online by Nov. 15. There is no cost to apply, but providing a credit card number is part of the application process, and those who are selected will be billed $35 for the permit. Tree cutting is scheduled to take place Dec. 2 in a designated area on the Nott Creek trail.“Not only is the tree cut a part of many Coloradans’ holiday tradition, but it also helps the park mitigate fire danger and thin the forest in a sustainable and thoughtful way,” park manager Todd Farrow said in a news release.Related ArticlesOutdoors ...

Old-school ideas about art and literature get an update in these Denver gallery shows

Old-school ideas about art and literature get an update in these Denver gallery shows To best appreciate the work of artist Sherry Wiggins, it helps to know a bit about her process.Artist Sherry Wiggins explores contemporary interpretations of classic figures using her own body as a canvas. This is her take on Aphrodite. (Luis Filipe Branco, provided by Michael Warren Gallery)In essence, it happens like this: She studies the lives of famous women, real and mythological, then uses costumes and props to inhabit their characters through her own lens, that of a 68-year-old woman living in the 21st century who is well-read and fully enmeshed in both present-day feminism and contemporary art. Then she finds a setting — in the case of the works on display currently at Michael Warren gallery, a series of outdoor fields in Holland and Portugal — and has someone else take her picture. For the past several years, she has collaborated with photographer Luís Filipe Branco on these endeavors. The result — the actual art product — is the photo itself, and at Michael Warre...

A review of “Coach Prime” other recent books with a Western focus

A review of “Coach Prime” other recent books with a Western focus “The Ridge,” by Peter Eichstaedt (Sunstone Press)“The Ridge,” by Peter Eichstaedt (Sunstone Press)Nearly 60 years ago, Reies Tijerina launched a raid on the Tierra Amarilla, N.M., courthouse that led to a mini-revolution over Hispanic land grants. Peter Eichstaedt’s “The Ridge” is a contemporary novel of a fight between local Tierra Amarilla land-rights activists and the government that is eerily reminiscent of that 1967 uprising.Luke Jackman, a Santa Fe reporter, is writing about a group of Hispanic sheepherders when the group suddenly occupies a land-grant-turned-wilderness area run for the benefit of rich elk hunters.  Luke is swept up in the coverage, reporting for his newspaper while at the same time acting as unwilling go-between for the revolutionaries and the police. Sitting beside a campfire with armed guards, Luke interviews El Cuchillo (“The Knife”), the leader, who tells him about the land granted to Mexican settlers nearly 200 years earlier...

Avalanche observations after 10 games: Signs of dominance, but issues to improve

Avalanche observations after 10 games: Signs of dominance, but issues to improve The Avalanche has played 10 games and are on pace for 114 points this season. This franchise has surpassed 112 points twice since moving to Colorado, and both years (2001 and 2022) ended with a Stanley Cup celebration. The Avalanche has also lost three of the past four games by a combined 15-0 margin, including a 7-0 spanking Saturday night by one of its chief Cup-contending rivals, the defending champion Vegas Golden Knights.Colorado is off to a great start and can be one of the best teams in the NHL, but is also officially in a weird funk with some work to do. Both things can be true. With that in mind, here are eight observations with the Avs at the 10-game mark. Given the dueling narratives of where the club is at right now, we’re going to cycle back and forth between positive developments and issues that could certainly be better for the club.Thumbs up – The penalty killing has been excellent. Colorado is third in the NHL at 92.5 percent, killing off 37 of 40 power plays for the o...

This year’s Warren Miller film is unlike any other

Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 23:06:39 GMT

This year’s Warren Miller film is unlike any other The opening scene in this year’s Warren Miller ski film, “All Time,” begins with grainy black-and-white ski footage and narration intended to emulate the movie-house newsreels of the 1900s. After a brief overview of the roots of skiing, the narrator introduces the man who created the ski film genre more than 70 years ago.“A beach bum named Warren Miller decided windburn was better than sunburn, and noticed that toting a camera around the mountain got him a lot of dates,” the narrator says. “So, in 1949, he made a ski movie. In 1950, he made another ski movie. And another, and another … .”Thus begins a Warren Miller film like no other. This one is intended to celebrate the creator of the series, who sold the company in 1988 and died in 2018, as well as his ongoing legacy. With the 75th anniversary of his first film, “Deep and Light,” coming next year, this year’s film celebrates the past. Next year’s will look at...

She killed her husband 14 years ago. In an unusual move, a Colorado judge just exonerated her. Traci Housman appears at a bond hearing at the Boulder County Jail in Boulder, Colorado, on Aug. 3, 2009. (Photo by Mark Leffingwell/Daily Camera)Traci Housman picked glass from her hair as she told a Boulder police detective that she’d just stabbed her husband, sticking him once with a knife in their kitchen after he’d slammed her head into the wall, into a picture frame that shattered and showered glass.Officers took her to the hospital before they transported her to jail on that August night 14 years ago, said Chuck Heidel, then the Boulder police detective on the case and now a senior investigator at the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office. She was charged with the second-degree murder of her husband, John Housman, a count that carried between 16 and 48 years in prison. But prosecutors, recognizing her self-defense claim, went on to offer her a deal: She could plead guilty to criminally negligent homicide, a low-level felony, and serve only probation.̶...
