OTTAWA — Google says it will volunteer some of its top executives to testify at a parliamentary committee. In a statement, the company says it aims to work constructively with the heritage committee that is studying the actions of Google after the Silicon Valley giant ran a five-week test that blocked news links to some of its Canadian users. The test was meant to assess the effects of a potential response to Bill C-18, the Liberal government’s controversial Online News Act.A spokesperson says Google will be making their president of global affairs and chief legal officer, Kent Walker and vice president of news, Richard Gingras available to meet with the committee. Both rejected a summons by the committee earlier this month. The head of Google Canada appeared in their place, but Google says it recognizes that MPs on the committee continue to have questions that they wish to have answered. This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 18, 2023. The Canadian Press

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Republicans who are seeking to lead their party in the 2024 presidential race are gathering in South Carolina this weekend with a goal at the forefront of their agenda: taking on “woke ideology.”On Saturday in North Charleston, Palmetto Family, which lobbies for what it considers to be “biblical values,” is hosting Vision ’24, described by organizers as “casting the conservative vision” for the next White House race. More than 400 attendees are expected to hear from presidential hopefuls, including Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor who was Donald Trump’s U.N. ambassador, and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.Organizers expect issues such as gas prices and national security to get plenty of attention. But there also is an expectation that much of the focus will be on the pushback by some across the U.S. against what they perceive as affronts to conservative ways of life by efforts characterized as “woke.” It’s pl...

We’ve played in the biggest environments. We’re ready for this opportunity. We’re ready to win. And that’s what we’re looking forward to. Go back to the drawing board, get some rest, be ready for Sunday.”“So what do you know about Gonzaga?” I asked. The 6-foot-7 sophomore pondered for a second.“I know a couple of players,” Coles replied. “Drew Timme, I played his high school in the playoffs one time.”Yeah, but it was one heck of a time. Back in February 2019, Timme was a 6-foot-10 monster at Ri...
