WINCHESTER – Still trying to put the pieces together to play as dominantly as head coach Jane Bergin believes it can, the Lexington boys volleyball team got a big push in the right direction while supporting a good cause Friday afternoon at Winchester High School. After dropping a second set filled with miscues, the No. 11 Minutemen (5-2) used overpowering play at the net over the next two frames to muscle past No. 8 St. John’s of Shrewsbury for a 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 25-15) win in the ALS One April Break Invitational championship game.Justin Cheng (12 kills, nine blocks) and Matteo Luciani (11 kills) were critical pieces alongside a list of contributors to overcome the sluggish second frame, winning an intense battle at the net to end the athletic Pioneers’ (7-2) seven-game win streak.Considering the slower start to the season than she expected, Bergin felt those third and fourth sets to seal a win against a quality team were huge for the team’s morale. Especially on April vaca...Ticker: Credit Suisse investors sue; P and G ups annual sales outlook

A group of Credit Suisse investors have sued Swiss financial regulators after a government-engineered takeover of the struggling bank by rival UBS left them with billions in losses. The investors are contesting an order by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, or FINMA, that wiped out about 16 billion Swiss francs ($17.3 billion) in higher-risk Credit Suisse bonds as part of an emergency rescue last month, lawyers said Friday. The hastily arranged, $3.25 billion deal prevented the downfall of Switzerland’s second-largest bank after its stock plunged and customers rushed to pull out their money amid fears about long-running troubles at Credit Suisse and upheaval in the global financial system after the collapse of two U.S. banks.P&G ups annual sales outlookProcter & Gamble Co., the maker of such iconic household products as Crest toothpaste, Tide detergent and Charmin toilet paper, raised its annual sales outlook on Friday, after turning in better-than-expecte...Notre Dame Academy easily wins the girls lacrosse battle of Hingham

HINGHAM — With town pride on the line, Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) dominated from the start, taking a 13-3 girls lacrosse victory over Hingham High School. The Cougars scored 11 goals in the opening half, holding the Harborwomen scoreless over the same period. Much of this was due to relentless pressure that disrupted any breakout opportunities for Hingham. NDA coach Meredith Frank McGinnis said that this was a priority for her team going into the game.“We’re really focused on being able to contain,” McGinnis said. “When you are able to do that, you are available to apply a little more pressure, and that worked really well for us today.”McGinnis said that the team had also been working on fundamentals and she was happy with the execution.“Draw controls continue to be a point of emphasis for us,” McGinnis said. “We were really strong on that today and it made a huge difference.”Jane Hilsabeck, a Hingham resident, broke the gates open just a few minutes into the game after charg...Man shot by Sheriff's deputy in North County

The Supreme Court’s action Friday regarding a key drug used in medication abortions may leave many women wondering: What does this mean for me?On Friday, the court preserved access to mifepristone, which is used in the most common form of abortion in the U.S., by rejecting lower-court restrictions while a lawsuit continues. The court’s action stands to leave access to mifepristone unchanged at least into next year, as appeals play out. Meanwhile, doctors, clinics and telehealth providers are taking steps to ensure they’ll still be able to offer abortion care in the future. For patients, there’s been confusion “about whether or not they can access their appointments,” said Dr. Becca Simon, a family medicine doctor in Pennsylvania who provides abortions. “We’re trying to just calm people.”IS THE USUAL TWO-DRUG TREATMENT STILL AVAILABLE?Yes. People can still get medication abortions using mifepristone from doctors and clinics in states where it was available before the rulings. SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The Chilean government’s newly announced plan to have the state take a majority stake in the lithium industry disconcerted business leaders, though analysts cautioned that the proposal appears to try to strike a middle ground between competing interests.President Gabriel Boric announced in a national broadcast Thursday night that private companies will have to partner with the government in exploiting Chile’s lithium, a metal used to make rechargeable batteries. Boric said the state would take a controlling interest in each partnership, leading some to call it a nationalization of the industry, while others disagreed.“Phrasing it as nationalization is too strong … it’s a quasi-nationalization in that the playing field will now be leveled in favor of the state,” said Nicolás Saldías, senior analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit for Latin America and the Caribbean. “There is no level playing field for the private sector in Chile.”Chile is the second l...Minnesota officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright to be freed

The acting head of the Federal Aviation Administration will leave the agency this summer, putting pressure on the White House to quickly find a replacement after President Joe Biden’s first choice withdrew last month.Billy Nolen, who has been acting administrator for the past year, said in a memo to staff that it has been a dream job.“But now it is time for a new captain to guide the FAA,” Nolen said in the memo. “I told (Transportation Secretary Pete) Buttigieg and notified the White House that I will depart as a new nominee is named this summer.”Biden’s first pick, Denver International Airport CEO Phillip Washington, withdrew in March after it became clear his nomination was dead in the Senate Commerce Committee, where Democrats hold just a one-vote majority.
