Pinto’s gambling suspension is the result of the latest league investigation into betting activites The NHL this week completed an investigation into the sports wagering activities of unsigned Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto, which led to a 41-game suspension. It is among the longest bans in hockey history for off-ice actions. The league said Thursday that the investigation found no evidence Pinto bet on NHL games.Pinto is the latest professional athlete to be suspended for something gambling related since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for legalized sports betting in 2018, which led to a flood of partnerships between leagues and sportsbooks, data providers and other wagering-related entities. Q: WHAT IS THE NHL POLICY ON GAMBLING?The collective bargaining agreement includes only one sentence on the matter: “Gambling on any NHL game is prohibited.” This is a fairly common stance for professional leagues, though changes could come when the current CBA expires in 2026 and a new one is hammered out in the era of continent-wide legalized betting. For one thing, NHL teams can...

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried testifies outside jury’s presence as judge decides what he can say NEW YORK (AP) — Sam Bankman-Fried got a test run at testifying at his fraud trial Thursday when a judge sent jurors home so he could hear snippets of testimony and decide what the FTX founder will be allowed to tell the jury.Bankman-Fried has decided to testify Friday to tell his version of how his multibillion-dollar cryptocurrency empire grew into a giant in the industry and then collapsed, causing billions of dollars in losses that prosecutors blame on his extravagant spending on investments, donations and a lavish lifestyle. It seemed on Thursday that Bankman-Fried was about to start his testimony before the jury after lunch when Judge Lewis A. Kaplan changed the plans, saying he’d prefer to make rulings on what Bankman-Fried can testify about before he starts. He had previously said he’d conduct a hearing and make those rulings on Friday.“We’re in the home stretch,” Kaplan told jurors as he sent them home for the day, saying he knew it was a little surprise for...

Coach-to-player technology that many have pushed for could have prevented Michigan scandal The frustrating part about watching the Michigan sign-stealing scandal play out for Todd Berry, the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, is that it all could have been avoided. For the past two years, Berry and his organization, which includes just about about every major college football coach, have backed with full support the use of in-game technology that would allow coaches to communicate with players on the field, just like they do in the NFL.No more signs would be necessary.“Because sign stealing is easy,” said Berry, whose 40-year coaching career included being head coach at Army and Louisiana-Monroe. “It’s easier, obviously, when you take certain steps.”The NCAA football playing rules committee has been slow to embrace the use of coach-to-player communication technology because of concerns that it could provide a competitive advantage to schools based on budgets. But a plan is in place to give it a test run during this bowl season. The ...

More moves are coming around the NFL.Teams looking to bolster their rosters for the second half have until Tuesday’s trade deadline at 4 p.m. EDT. Several established veterans could end up switching uniforms. There were a slew of trades at this time last season. The Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t wait to upgrade at safety, acquiring two-time All-Pro Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans earlier this week. Byard is a significant addition at a position that was depleted by injury and the departure of C.J. Gardner-Johnson in free agency.“Obviously, I feel like I’m a great player, but at the end of the day, it’s not really about that,” Byard said Wednesday. “It’s about what I do now that I’m here. I had a great career in Tennessee, but I’m a Philadelphia Eagle now and that’s what it’s more about — moving forward, making plays, and winning games.“This is my eighth season and I’m feeling really good, coming off a bye week, t...
