US military grounds entire fleet of Osprey aircraft following a deadly crash off the coast of Japan WASHINGTON (AP) — The military announced late Wednesday it was grounding all of its Osprey V-22 helicopters, one week after eight Air Force Special Operations Command service members died in a crash off the coast of Japan. The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps took the extraordinary step of grounding hundreds of aircraft after a preliminary investigation of last week's crash indicated that a materiel failure — that something went wrong with the aircraft — and not a mistake by the crew led to the deaths. The crash raised new questions about the safety of the Osprey, which has been involved in multiple fatal accidents over its relatively short time in service. Japan grounded its fleet of 14 Ospreys after the crash. Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, head of Air Force Special Operations Command, directed the standdown “to mitigate risk while the investigation continues," the command said in a statement. “Preliminary investigation information indicates a potential materiel failure caused the mish...

Rare Air

Rare Air South Florida is undergoing a rare and temporary change to colder temperatures. The cooling peaks Thursday morning (after the initial cool batch arrived late Tuesday and Wednesday). On Wednesday, daytime highs barely crossed the 70-degree mark. The last time that happened? Way back in January. As the colder air continues to rush in, readings will fall into the widespread 50ºs early Thursday. The only exception will be the Florida Keys, where temperatures will bottom out in the lower 60ºs. Even as jackets and sweaters make a comeback, realize this “cold spell” ends by Friday. That’s when winds shift. As the air turns off the ocean waters we’ll see temperatures rebound, area-wide. If you’re thinking about the upcoming weekend, you’ll need to plan for much warmer air. Highs will return to the lower and possibly middle 80ºs with humidity also on the rise. There’s also the potential for some rain showers returning. The most opportuni...

Interior states like Massachusetts not receiving enough federal funds to support migrants, delegation says Massachusetts did not receive an equitable share of federal funds designed to help states pay for shelters, leaving the Bay State to “expend increasingly large sums of money” to support an influx of migrants and local homeless families seeking help, the state’s congressional delegation wrote in a Wednesday letter.About four months after Gov. Maura Healey declared a state of emergency in response to the number of migrants arriving seeking shelter, the emergency shelter system is still maxed out at 7,500 families.Massachusetts finds itself in a “particularly precarious position,” federal lawmakers wrote in a note to U.S Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell.“The United States has been experiencing a virtually unprecedented number of new arrivals, with an increasing trend of migrant families ending up in interior states like Massachusetts. Trump would be dictator for just ‘a day,’ he says, citing alleged Biden actions “I’m not the dictator, you are,” seems to be the response of the Trump campaign after the former president told Fox News host Sean Hannity he wouldn’t act like an authoritarian, “except for day one.”In a lengthy bit of clean-up messaging sent by former President Donald Trump’s campaign Wednesday morning, the ex-commander-in-chief’s representatives said that, despite his assertion he would be dictator — if only temporarily — it is not Trump who is threatening to lead a dictatorship, but President Joe Biden.“There’s a dictator in the White House. While the White House and their puppets in the media project themselves onto President Trump, the truth is that the real dictator is already in the White House. Joe Biden abuses his power to target journalists, politicians, activists, and concerned parents,” the campaign wrote. The campaign’s response to Trump’s comments — comically reminiscent of his insistence that it was Hillary Clinton, not he, serving as a puppet o...
