Baby boomers buoy Transat sales, with no sign of slowdown on the horizon: CEO MONTREAL — Baby boomers have shed their pandemic reticence around travel as they increasingly fly abroad again — a boon for Transat AT Inc., its CEO says.“People from 55-plus — the baby boomers — have resumed their pre-COVID travel pattern, which was not the case in 2022,” Annick Guérard said Thursday.“It represents a good proportion of our clientele. And they have significant disposable wealth and the time to travel and spend,” she told analysts on a conference call, noting older Canadians spend 15 to 20 per cent more than the average Transat customer.“This is really important for us. And they are expected to be much more resilient than younger consumers in the face of higher prices and high inflation, which we know will continue in the upcoming year.”Despite those economic clouds, Guérard said that “we don’t see signs of a slowdown” in bookings on the horizon — for summer or winter. “Demand is holding despite higher fares...

Russia shells Ukrainian city inundated by dam collapse after Zelenskyy visit KHERSON, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces Thursday shelled a southern Ukrainian city inundated by flooding in a catastrophic dam collapse, Ukrainian officials said, forcing a suspension of some rescue efforts hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy went to the area to assess the damage. The fresh fighting returned security issues to the region, two days after the collapse of the Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River set off a scramble to evacuate residents in dozens of flooded areas and get aid to those still there.Officials on both sides said least 14 people were killed in the flooding, thousands are homeless and tens of thousands are without drinking water after the collapse. Kyiv accused Moscow of blowing up the dam and its associated hydropower plant, which the Kremlin’s forces controlled, while Russia said Ukraine bombarded it.The ensuing flooding has ruined crops, displaced land mines, wrought widespread environmental damage, and set the stage for long-term electricity shortag...

Federal Liberals want to make hybrid work permanent for members of Parliament OTTAWA — The federal Liberals want to make virtual participation in the House of Commons a permanent option for members of Parliament. All parties agreed to create a hybrid workplace amid lockdowns at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and the system has been used ever since.Government House leader Mark Holland says this has meant MPs can continue their work while also attending important events in their ridings or dealing with personal and family matters. He says making it permanent could help encourage new people to run for public office, such as parents of young children. Holland is expected to put a motion forward in the House of Commons today, and he says it will be debated and voted on before June 23, the last day of sitting before a summer break is scheduled to begin. The order that currently allows for a hybrid Parliament expires at the end of June. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 8, 2023.The Canadian Press

Strike leaves Broadway stars to rely on their ‘live’ muscles NEW YORK (AP) — There are a lot of questions surrounding this year’s Tony Awards — and not just about who might win.The Hollywood writers’ strike has left much of Sunday’s telecast with unknowns. There will be performances from the nominated musicals, pre-recorded montages of the plays and acceptance speeches. Everything else seems up in the air.Striking members of the Writers Guild of America have agreed not to picket but won’t allow its writers to work on the Tonys, leaving Broadway’s biggest night without an established script. Any banter will have to be impromptu. But if any group of people are best equipped to handle the stress from a live event, it’s the Broadway community. Going on without a net just doesn’t scare them. “I think the theatrical community is the one artistic community that is absolutely capable of pulling off a show like this and not having it feel like, ‘Oh, I’m so scared and nervous!’” says Wayne Brady, who has b...
