SAN DIEGO — Former NFL player and Maywood native Sergio Brown has been charged with first-degree murder of his mother.Myrtle Simmons-Brown, 73, was discovered dead in a creek behind her home, in Maywood's 1000 block of Nichols Lane on Sept. 16. Police said Brown lived there as well.Last month, Maywood police have stopped short of naming Brown as a person of interest, but stated they’d like to talk to him. CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson delivered his first budget address Wednesday. It is expected to cover everything from filling the more than nearly $540 million budget shortfall to the growing cost of the migrant crisis.The mayor has been warning for weeks this was going to be a challenging budget.Johnson came into office with progressive goals — opening mental health clinics and pouring millions into programs for the homeless, and his treatment not trauma plan.Johnson wants to do this without raising property taxes and with some federal relief dollars ending.While campaigning for mayor, Johnson proposed a number of revenue generating ideas, most included fees and taxes aimed at the wealthy.The Chicago Sun-Times reports Johnson recently hinted the elimination of 1,700 police vacancies. HONOLULU (KHON) - A boat tour off of the coast of Hawaii captured a rare sight on video: a tiger shark attacking a sea turtle.Kaimana Ocean Safari owner Kayleigh Grant called the scene "nature's natural process" -- the shark on the hunt for food and the turtle fighting for its life.Grant had taken her boat tour out on their regular route when suddenly, about a half-mile off Kealakekua Bay, the shark was seen repeatedly ramming into the green sea turtle.The turtle gave its best effort to fight off the shark, attempting to turn its shell toward the predator."And it works pretty well," said Grant on the turtle's defense. HOUSTON (KXAN) — A study published on Wednesday by the Episcopal Health Foundation (EHF) claimed that polling data of Texans shows a "growing health care affordability and access crisis" in the state.“This is more than a health care crisis; It’s a statewide crisis,” said Dr. Ann Barnes, EHF president and CEO, in a press release. “These numbers paint a grim picture of the barriers Texans face in accessing essential medical care.”Some data points in that press release include:68% of Texans skipped or postponed medical care because of cost;66% of Texans without insurance do not have a primary care doctor;50% of Texans put off necessary health care; and,35% did not fill a prescription because of cost.The first data point is up from 59% in 2022.The struggles to afford health care varies by race and income. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A new bundle of joy calls Austin home after Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services and Austin Fire Department crews helped deliver a baby girl Tuesday.ATCEMS said in a social media post medics were dispatched early Tuesday morning following reports of a pregnant patient having contractions.
