Our lab found heat + humidity gets dangerous faster than many people realize

(The Conversation) - Heat waves are becoming supercharged as the climate changes – lasting longer, becoming more frequent and getting just plain hotter. One question a lot of people are asking is: “When will it get too hot for normal daily activity as we know it, even for young, healthy adults?”The answer goes beyond the temperature you see on the thermometer. It’s also about humidity. Our research shows the combination of the two can get dangerous faster than scientists previously believed.Scientists and other observers have become alarmed about the increasing frequency of extreme heat paired with high humidity, measured as “wet-bulb temperature.” During the heat waves that overtook South Asia in May and June 2022, Jacobabad, Pakistan, recorded a maximum wet-bulb temperature of 33.6 C (92.5 F) and Delhi topped that – close to the theorized upper limit of human adaptability to humid heat.People often point to a study publis...Austin-based company attempts to design fusion power plant in Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The path to clean energy is becoming clear in Texas. Austin-based Focused Energy was one of eight companies to receive a $46 million grant from the Department of Energy. The grant is part of President Biden's plan to have a fusion powered electricity plant within a decade."Our ultimate goal is to produce electrical power with just tap water," said Charlie Jarrott, a senior scientist with Focused Energy.Jarrott said that fusion power is created when two atoms are forced to merge under intense heat and pressure, something that happens on our own sun. But doing this on Earth is challenging. "The universe doesn't want us doing fusion, the ability to confine something for just long enough to allow it to happen has proven to be one of the greatest challenges over the past 100 years or so."Bringing fusion power to the massesThe DOE selected eight companies to receive the money. Each has 18 months to design a power plant that uses fusion power. If they are successful, they w...New Spanish restaurant opens in Troy
