By Colleen Long and Zeke Miller | Associated PressVALLEY FORGE, Pa. — President Joe Biden warned Friday that Donald Trump’s efforts to retake the White House in 2024 pose a grave threat to the country, the day before the third anniversary of the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol by then-President Trump’s supporters aiming to keep him in power.Speaking near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, where George Washington and the Continental Army spent a bleak winter nearly 250 years ago, Biden said that Jan. 6 2021, marked a moment where “we nearly lost America — lost it all.” He said the presidential race — a likely rematch with Trump, who is the far and away GOP frontrunner — is “all about” whether American democracy will survive. The speech, the president’s first political event of the election year, was intended to clarify the expected choice for voters this fall. Ahead of Warriors return, James Wiseman harbors no resentment

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:22:30 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — Breaking the huddle inside the cramped gymnasium tucked inside the Detroit Pistons’ posh hotel, James Wiseman’s seven-foot frame strode toward a group of reporters on the sideline, slunk against the wall and slid down to the court, beginning to remove his bright green sneakers. In about eight hours, Wiseman’s name will be announced over the loudspeakers across town, where the former No. 2 overall pick will play his first game against the team that drafted him, failed to develop him, then sent him packing almost 11 months ago, to the day.If there was any ounce of resentment, any inclination to exact revenge on the court later that night, it didn’t come across from Wiseman, whose youthful face offered a reminder that he still is only 22 years old, wearing his nappy black hair in the same messy afro he had when the Warriors traded him to Detroit last February.“It’s a business,” Wiseman said, crouched on the ground. “It feel...

“May December,” the darkly comic drama loosely inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal, has been racking up acclaim, awards and nominations, especially for its break-out star, Charles Melton, who plays a 36-year-old man married to the older woman who seduced him as a 13-year-old boy.Melton’s role has been described as the “heart” of Todd Haynes’ movie, but Letourneau’s former husband, Vili Fualaau, who serves as the model for Melton’s Joe Yoo, is not happy about “May December’s” depiction of “my original story,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. In particular, Fualaau is not happy that the director, screenwriter and actors failed to consult him before making the movie.“I’m offended by the entire project and the lack of respect given to me — who lived through a real story and is still living it,” Fualaau told THR.Fualaau could also be concerned that the film has prompted renewed interest in his scand...

By Mark Sherman and Nicholas Riccardi | Associated PressWASHINGTON — The Supreme Court said Friday it will decide whether former President Donald Trump can be kept off the ballot because of his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, inserting the court squarely in the 2024 presidential campaign. The justices acknowledged the need to reach a decision quickly, as voters will soon begin casting presidential primary ballots across the country. The court agreed to take up Trump’s appeal of a case from Colorado stemming from his role in the events that culminated in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.Arguments will be held in early February. The court will be considering for the first time the meaning and reach of a provision of the 14th Amendment barring some people who “engaged in insurrection” from holding public office. Nearly two years ago, the San Francisco 49ers and state environmental officials launched a campaign create a specialized California license plate sporting the team’s logo. The idea was to boost the famed football franchise’s image, and use most of the proceeds to help fund programs at California’s state parks system, similar to the way that other license plates raise money for Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, veterans programs and other causes. But now, with less than five months until a make-or-break deadline, the team that has racked up a 1st place record on the field this season is looking for a Hail Mary from its fans.Under state law, motorists must pre-purchase 7,500 orders for any specialty license plate before the California Department of Motor Vehicles will agree to print it. As of this week, only 2,700 motorists orders have come in for the 49ers plate, which was first unveiled in May 2022. The cost is $50 up front and $40 a year to renew.“It’s a lofty goal,...
