Vikings tight end Josh Oliver on his fumble: ‘I let the Vikings down’

It’s a phrase head coach Kevin O’Connell has leaned on over the past month as the Vikings have struggled with ball security: Whenever a player has the ball in their hands, they have the whole organization in their hands. That explains why tight end Josh Oliver was so distraught after the Vikings suffered a 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium. After catching a pass on the first play from scrimmage, Oliver made a defender miss, then raced up field where the ball got dislodged by safety Justin Reid.“I was trying to make a play and was doing too much,” Oliver said. “I let the Vikings down.”Asked what he could’ve done differently, Oliver emphasized the importance of tucking the ball away while in traffic. Not surprisingly, fellow tight end T.J. Hockenson tried his best to keep Oliver’s spirits up postgame.“That guy creates an explosive play with a great move to start and then the guy gets his fac...Popular lights display relocates to Festus for Halloween season

It’s something onlookers are thrilled about.Carol Burkhard and her daughter-in-law, Shannon, made a point of getting to Larry G. Crites Memorial Park in Festus early to claim their parking spot for Sunday night’s show.“We’re two little kids at heart,” Burkhard said. “We came out to watch. They had it last year, and we enjoyed it.”Joanne Dormoy said that after missing the show last year, she made a point of coming out to see it the first weekend this year."I've seen it on video, but I've never been here in-person,” Dormoy said. “So, I wanted to see it up clo...Kiszla: Where does Sean Payton rank on coaching scale of Vince Lombardi to Nathaniel Hackett?

It’s infuriating the Broncos don’t know how to win, but what’s far worse is how a once-proud NFL franchise doesn’t even know how to act in defeat. While bad football happens, a team with bad football character starts at the top, and coach Sean Payton is responsible for losers in the Denver locker room that duck and run when the going gets tough. After a wretched 31-21 loss to the New York Jets, during which the Broncos forgot how to tackle and could not hold onto the football, much less the lead, Payton stood in account for only 4 minutes and 42 seconds during his postgame news conference before spinning on his heels and bolting from the podium.“Thank you, guys,” Payton told media members, before ducking for cover, much the way a bully does when challenged.Sorry, Mr. Payton. But that doesn’t cut it in Broncos Country, where losses can’t be brushed off by a coach who came to Denver and immediately put everybody involved with the franchise on blast.Like everything that stinks, bad chara...Broncos reeling defense ripped for 234 yards rushing by revenge-minded Nathaniel Hackett, Jets offense in 31-21 loss: “We choked”

Sean Payton still likes to look at photos of plays between drives rather than the tablets that instantaneously deliver video to NFL sidelines. He calls them “the pictures.”The Broncos coach had a particularly brutal one in mind following his team’s 31-21 loss to the Jets on Sunday afternoon.A frame showing Denver’s defensive line getting washed down yet again. Jets running back Breece Hall steaming through behind a fullback who had nobody to block. Broncos safety Kareem Jackson scrambling on a bad angle and failing to get so much as a hand on Hall.No Broncos in sight the rest of the way to a 72-yard touchdown on the opening play call of the second half for Jets offensive coordinator and former Denver head coach Nathaniel Hackett. The Jets had only just taken the lead, but it felt like a knockout punch nonetheless. For the game, sure, but also for much more than that.“The first half of the game, I felt like we defended the run well,” Payton said. “Then in the second half, some of the m...Broncos struggles in third quarter has been one of many problems this season

If insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, Broncos Country must be losing its mind. The Broncos have won the coin toss in five straight games to start the season and deferred to receive the second-half kick each time. And each time, they’ve come away with zero points. On Sunday against the New York Jets, the Broncos opened the third quarter with a 13-8 lead and the offense promptly went three-and-out. Rookie running back Jaleel McLaughlin was stopped for a 2-yard gain. Quarterback Russell Wilson threw an incomplete pass. Then Wilson was sacked on third-and-long.On the Jets’ next offensive snap, running back Breece Hall, who abused the Broncos all game, burst through a massive hole and cruised into the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown to take a 15-13 lead.In the 31-21 loss at Empower Field at Mile High, everything that’s plagued the Broncos during its 1-4 start was on display. Denver’s offensive struggles in the third quarter was one ...Nathaniel Hackett said nothing after his Jets beat Broncos, Sean Payton. Scoreboard said it all.

Nathaniel Hackett intimated he’d moved on. His eyes didn’t. They were still gleaming an hour after Jets 31, Broncos 21.The former Broncos coach, who had a 4-11 record in 11 months in charge at Dove Valley, one of the shortest tenures in franchise history, declined comment when approached by The Denver Post in the visiting locker room following New York’s victory. The scoreboard said plenty. So did the Jets players late Sunday afternoon.“(It’s) like (tailback Dalvin Cook) playing the Vikings. He wants to win really bad, ” New York tight end C.J. Uzomah said after the visitors handed the Broncos their fourth loss in five games to open the season, and a fourth game in which they’ve given up 28 points or more.“We wanted to win for (Hackett). It’s the nature of the beast, right? We know he wanted to win this one … I’m glad, I’m really glad, we got this for him.”The Jets hired Hackett as offensive coordinator late...Suspects caught on camera lighting car on fire

DENVER (AP) — The expression on Sean Payton’s face when his quarterback retreated to the sideline after his last-minute fumble sealed Denver’s latest loss was a combination of exasperation, irritation and frustration.A telling look by the coach of the Denver Broncos to sum up the game and, really, the season so far.Payton appeared none too pleased with Russell Wilson after his QB’s late fumble while scrambling away from pressure was returned 39 yards for a touchdown by Bryce Hall that capped the New York Jets’ 31-21 win Sunday. It was that sort of head-scratching afternoon for the Broncos (1-4), who also had a muffed punt, lost a fumble on a poorly executed reverse and saw Wilson called for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety. If that wasn’t enough, Denver had a third quarter in which the offense totaled minus-16 yards in four drives.“No one cares about what ails us or woes us,” Payton said. “This one hurts. We didn’t play well.”Or o...The Rams hung with the Eagles early, but couldn’t recover after giving up a TD before halftime

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams did enough in the first half to take a lead against one of the best teams in the NFC, only for late defensive breakdowns to send them back to the locker room trailing.Allowing a 75-yard touchdown drive in the final 32 seconds of the second quarter didn’t just change the tenor of a 23-14 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. It served as another reminder of how far the retooled Rams have to go.“That was tough,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “And it was almost identical to the way that things played out against the 49ers. In some instances, it was almost deja vu.”The Rams (2-3) were well-positioned after Matthew Stafford threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to rookie Puka Nacua for a 14-10 lead. But cornerback Derion Kendrick gave up a 38-yard catch to A.J. Brown on third down with 7 seconds left, compounding his error by committing a horse-collar tackle that moved the Eagles to the Rams 14-yard line.Kendrick was then called for pass interfere...Latest news
