As streamers like HBO and Showtime cut costs, TV shows and residuals vanish Actor Diana-Maria Riva is all too familiar with one of her shows being canceled. For a performer, it’s a painful, unfortunate part of show business. But this was different. In December, Riva was floored when she found out that “Gordita Chronicles,” her recently canceled family comedy, would be removed from HBO Max’s vast streaming library — one of dozens of shows that HBO last year effectively wiped from existence for U.S. viewers. Among others: “Westworld,” “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” “Minx,” “Mrs. Fletcher” and numerous animated and reality series. For Riva, the developments were crushing. Over 10 episodes, the critically lauded series followed a plus-sized 12-year-old named Cucu as she and her Dominican family adapt to life in 1980s Miami.“It was as if somebody had broken up with you and then came back to remind you a couple of weeks later that we’ve broken up,” says Riva, who played Cucu’s mother. “It was already heartbreaking. But then it’s an ...

New bill would allow Massachusetts judges to order outpatient mental health treatment When Ashoke and Vinita Rampuria’s son returned home after taking a year off from college, to complete his course work, he didn’t seem like himself.“He was unable to complete tasks. He was lying on the sofa,” said Ashoke Rampuria, a resident of Acton. “He took some jobs, but could not hold them.”In 2011, his son was diagnosed with what Rampuria described as a severe mental illness. He soon began cycling in and out of health care facilities, appearing to get his illness under control and then slipping back once released. In 2021, the couple said their son used a new medication and was able to hold a job for three months, but did not continue on the drug. All along, Rampuria said he and his wife lacked a crucial tool — the power of a judge to order their now 36-year-old son, currently at a psychiatric hospital in Lynn, into mandatory outpatient care.Massachusetts, along with Connecticut and Maryland, are the only states that don’t give courts that authority.“This is a revolving door. Taiwan threat from China serious, House GOP chairman says WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Select Committee on China said Saturday the U.S. must take seriously the threat posed to Taiwan, as Beijing launched military drills around the island in the aftermath of the Taiwanese president’s meetings with American lawmakers.Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., who attended the meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen in California last week, told The Associated Press that he plans to lead his committee in working to shore up the island government’s defenses, encouraging Congress to expedite military aid to Taiwan.“I think it all just points to what is obvious,” Gallagher told the AP, arguing that Chinese President Xi Jinping is intent on reunifying Taiwan with the mainland.“We need to be moving heaven and earth to enhance our deterrence and denial posture, so that Xi Jinping concludes that he just can’t do it,” Gallagher said.China conducted drills with warships and dozens of fighter jets around Taiwan on Saturday, the Tai...

Two federal judges issued opposing rulings on abortion pills. Here’s what’s going on. The ruling by a federal judge in Texas invalidating the Food and Drug Administration’s approval 23 years ago of the abortion pill mifepristone has the potential to be the most consequential abortion decision since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last June. But there are a lot of uncertainties — especially because a federal judge in Washington state issued a contradictory ruling less than an hour later saying the FDA should do nothing to restrict the pill’s availability in most states that allow abortion. So the situation is complicated. Here is what we know and what it could mean. What did the two rulings say? Both rulings are preliminary injunctions, issued before the full cases have been heard. But the dueling injunctions set up a legal showdown that is likely to reach the Supreme Court. The ruling by Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, a Trump appointee who has written critically about Roe v. Wade, declares the FDA’s approval...
